Chapter Eleven

“How many tickets have we sold so far?” Libbie asked.

The four friends were gathered in Julie’s kitchen for a fundraising meeting. And Peggy, the fourth of Inga’s cats, was resting peacefully on the windowsill, occasionally flicking her tail in response to something they said.

“All of them. We’re sold out,” Kate said.

Julie shook her head as though she’d misheard. “Wait, what? Are you serious?”

“Sold. Out,” Kate repeated. “Do I look like an amateur to you? Do you know how many school fundraisers and Girl Scout cookies I have under my belt?”

Rebecca was amazed. Part of her had worried they’d started too close to the event to hit their goal, but Kate had been right about the scarcity tactic. The more coveted something seemed, the more people wanted it.

“Any updates from MaryAnn?” Julie asked.

Rebecca heaved a weary sigh. “Only to say that she’s still looking, but there aren’t many lease options available right now in general.”

“What about a cheaper building to buy?” Libbie asked. “Maybe you could reduce your fundraising goal.”

“The cost of renovating a cheaper building…It would just end up costing the same as buying the building we’re in,” Rebecca explained. “Not to mention the disruption to the animals. I can’t put a price tag on that.”

“I looked at a few buildings for sale online and the cheaper options were more rural,” Kate added. “You don’t want to be isolated, especially in the winter.”

“Now I’m picturing The Shining,” Julie said, shuddering. “Thanks for that.”

Kate placed her hands on the counter. “Let’s fine-tune the details for Monday. We can offer our suggestions through the lost art of miming and the others have to guess.”

“Miming is a lost art for a reason,” Libbie said. “Mimes are creepy.”

“Are we seriously going to play Charades?” Julie asked, her gaze flitting from one friend to the next.

“You only want to make it a competition,” Rebecca accused.

Kate offered a weak smile. “It’ll be more fun that way.”

“For you, maybe,” Julie shot back. “The rest of us mere mortals would prefer cocktails and conversation minus the competition.”

“I hate to break it to you, but I can read your minds,” Rebecca said, “which means I’d win without breaking a sweat.”

Kate frowned. “A point I failed to consider.”

“We don’t have time for games anyway,” Rebecca said. “We have too much to do for Monday.”

Kate made a calming gesture with her hands. “It’s under control.”

Rebecca flicked a hand in the direction of the living room. “Does that look like it’s under control to you?”

The folding table they’d set up in Julie’s living room was covered in an assortment of objects and sheets of paper. Nothing was organized.

“It’ll be fine,” Libbie reassured her. “Everything will be set up well in advance of the event.”

“I’m the one who has to stare at the mess,” Julie said. “Not that I’m complaining. All for a good cause.” She forced a cheerful smile.

“I’d like to hear more about this Peter Putnam,” Libbie said, eyeing Rebecca curiously.

“We’re here to talk about the fundraiser,” Rebecca reminded them, her cheeks starting to burn.
